Gifts from DAF at your foundation to another fund at your foundation

Options
I'm hoping to get some insight on how others handle this scenario.  We have a donor who has established a donor advised fund with our foundation.  They wish to make a grant from their fund as a contribution to another fund at our foundation.  How do we recognized this "gift" on the donor's record without counting this as revenue?

Does interfund entries play a role in this process?

Any help is appreciated.

  • Hey Dianne,

Is this a product question? If so, can you tell me which product and I can move this question into that community for more answers? Thanks!

I don't know how you could count this as a gift, as I'm sure you counted the original gift in your fundraising totals for that year.  As this is the same money, these funds are not new to your organization.  I think it should be noted somewhere on the record, but I don't know if it it possible to place it as a gift on the donor record.
  • Discussion moved to Raiser's Edge forums. Thanks!
  • Hi Diane,

Is the original contribution to the DAF booked on the donor's record?  This is what my organization ended up doing after talking with several other organizations that had different set ups (Thank you! Ellen Tucker).  Since we booked the original contribution establishing and growing the DAF on the donor's record, we created a new record for the DAF (linked to the donor and in the portfolio of the fundraiser/steward of the donor), and book the distributions from the DAF to other funds within our organization there.  The distributions are booked as Gift Type=Other and are not posted to FE (we are integrated with FE).  That way, fundraisers can relatively easily see where and when the donor requested funds to be directed, and we can pull or exclude them in various reports as needed.

  • Hi Tatyana - This sounds like a great option.  Thank you so much!
  • Hi Dariel, We're not necessarily looking to count this as a gift, more so trying to have it show on the donor record that they committed funds to a specific appeal.  Same as if the grant were made to another organization.

    Thanks.
  • Tatyana - When you say "book the distributions from the DAF to other funds within our organization there", I'm assuming you mean enter as a gift?

Diane, we enter a "gift" on the DAF organization record to the fund and any applicable appeal.  We also add an action with Action type of "DAF Transfer" to the individual donor's record (the person who requested the "internal grant") so that the development team can see that they are supporting us "internally"  There are attributes on the action as well that indicate amount of the transfer and we populate the fund field on the action to = the fund where the distribution is being made.
  • Thank for the detailed description Elaine!  I definitely appreciate it!
  • Hi Dianne,

Yes, I meant we enter it as a gift on the DAF's RE record.  Only the gift type is Other and it doesn't get posted to FE so the money doesn't get counted twice in the general ledger.
