Curious to know how many of you, specifically education orgs, utilize these fields and how you are using them?  Any lists, tables or website resources you can share to figure out what should populate the lists.

  • We're an independent school, and yes, we use them. I'm not sure we leverage the data as much as we could, and many records are still missing one or both tags, but I've spent a fair amount of effort scrubbing these tables for our use, and applying tags whenever I see an obvious piece lacking.

My greatest struggle is when we get employment info - how much time should we spend to research what industry the organization is, and what profession a vague job title may fall under? Thus, tagging typically only happens when it's obvious (or occasionally by the constituent themself).

Most industry/profession lists out there are either too short or too long to be very useful for us. I've included our lists below.

  • We only record these when a position is known, or for our staff and faculty profiles.  While we would love to have an easy method to keep all of the employment information updated, it is not at the moment, and that makes reporting on Position, Industry, Profession, difficult.

  • We don't use them for degree fields, mostly because our degree fields are already tracked under the Education tab. I have thought about using this field for classifying their current career field (as opposed to degree field), since less than a third of college graduates actually take a job in their degree field. Tracking their current career field would be challenging to stay on top of, but useful for customizing direct mail marketing pieces and for major donor prospecting (doctors making more money than veterinarians, for example).
