Athletics Gifts Split 80/20

Options
Hi -

We're adopting a new policy for gifts to Athletics that, when a gift goes to a specific team or project, 80% goes to that team/project and 20% goes to general athletic support.

Does anyone do this at their institution and, if so, how do you handle on 1) online giving page, 2) recording in RE, and 3) on receipts?

Trying to find out if folks have set up automated calculations to show the split on giving forms and receipts...or if you just put a footnote on giving forms and receipts to indicate the split.

Thanks very much,

- John

  • I use split gifts! Unfortunately I haven't found a way to get the receipt to pull the split, so I hand type it after the receipts run. Not ideal, but it works for me as we don't have a ton of split gifts. Maybe one in fifty are split. I usually format the receipt like this "thank you for your donation on (date) of $100: $50 to the First Fund and $50 to the Second Fund..."etc.

Also, if you're not already using the split gift functionality, it will probably break most of your reports. RE isn't that smart about split gifts, and double-counts them unless you explicitly export split gift amounts.
  • Thanks, Kylea! I appreciate you responding.

We don't use the split gift functionality for precisely the reason you stated - too many reports would not run correctly. Receipts are definitely an issue as well.
  • John,

We have a similar situation where our hospice gifts are split between the program and endowment. Not sure how your funds are reflected on your receipt but I just show the gift amount and the 2 fund descriptions. I adjusted the description so its reads as a proper sentence (for endowment and Hospice Endowment) since all of our materials state that the gift will be split 80/20.

This way if its a memorial or other gift to hospice the fund only shows hospice but when split it reads Hospice and Hospice Endowment.

  • We also use gift splits for a lot of things.  Almost every event has a split between two, if not three, different funds.

We do NOT use RE's receipting/letter function (too limiting)... Instead we use a Gift Export to a Word Mail Merge that groups each day's gift by constituent.  So we can put the constituent's contact info in the header of the letter and then we can actually list the splits out in the body of the letter (Fund Split Amount and Fund Split Description) then we use the "Receipt Amount" field from the gift to list out the "tax deductible" amount.

It all works remarkably well, though it did take some time to set up and get working.
