Donations from past appeals

What is best practice for donations that come in from an appeal that could be more than a year old. For example, we received a donation in August 2019 from an appeal letter we sent out in Spring 2018.

We add whatever the appeal the donor is replying to, no matter the date.  We've received donations to appeals that were many years old.

This is a tricky situation.  Most people assume that receiving the most recent appeal is what triggers the gift, however there may be something to the fact that they did not use that reply device to send in their gift.  Like Barbara Schlichter‍, we also code them to the reply device they return.  However, when we pull reports, we always use the last 3 appeals specifically for this reason.
