Unrecognized Database Format

Options
Hello!

I am trying to run a Crystal Report that I have run many times before. Now I am getting the message of "Unrecognized database format". Anyone else having this issue? When I searched the Knowledgebase it said it had something to do with Windows Updates in January but only gave instructions on how to remove the updates if you are running Windows 10 and we are running Windows 7.

I even tried to resave the export thinking it had something to do with the file but I am getting the same issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Yes, I ran into this problem, apparently it started with the last microsoft update. Blackbaud is aware of the problem but from what I was told they are waiting for microsoft to fix the issue.
  • Michele,

I had this problem last week after the Windows updates were installed and we were able to resolve it by uninstalling the update file from my system. My IT department also paused any future Windows updates until they issue a solution. I would still check the update files on your system to see if they match any of the known files listed in Blackbaud's Knowledgebase Article. I hope you are able to get this resolved quickly. I know how frustrating these issues can be.
  • Thank you!

I will try to see if I can uninstall the updates.

Fingers crossed they fix it soon!
  • If this is the same error I've been getting (and others when they try to run custom reports I've set up for them) I just ended up recreating the custom report, using the exact same export and crystal report file, and it seemed to work.  Not sure why that would be the case but as long as I got it to work I'm not going to question it at the moment.
  • This is the same problem I was having.  Uninstalling windows updated KB4480960 and KB4480970 fixed it (I'm on windows 7).

The only problem is our system admins have set windows update to install automatically every wednesday evening, so I have to go in them and manually remove them every week.

  • You can block the windows update install on Windows 7.

Go to the control panel, find Windows update (easier with the small icon view), usually at the bottom of one of the columns.  Uncheck the bad update, then right click and hide.  This will prevent it from installing it until the patch or fix is out from Microsoft.  Should be soon.
  • Thanks Denise, I was looking for that option and couldn't remember how to do it.
  • For some extra context, here's a link to a post in Microsoft Community forums post about the bug-- it's clearly a big deal, and can Break .MDB files-- or at least can break Microsoft software's ability to deal with .MDB files-- where-ever it's installed.

Unrecognized database format after January 2019 update KB4480966
  • Thanks Isaac, that was interesting.  I didn't realize how many people still were using the access 97 format.
