Volunteer Hub and Phone Numbers

I'm trying to wrap my head around the following situation:


I'm trying to clean up all the category of phone numbers in my database.  We had over 21 different phone types, and I managed to shorten that list to just: Preferred, Business, Home and Mobile. 


We synch Volunteer Hub into RE, and the person who does the synch told me that she was asked to activate Business Direct, because the synch won't synch unless this change is made.


I have a few issues, or questions going on.  


1. Is it typical for VH to add different types of numbers?  According to her the synch would not progress unless Business Direct was made active in tables.  I'd be disappointed if this continued, and suddenly I find myself having to bring back 21 different types of numbers.  Also she said she couldn't make the number anything but Business Direct.


2. How many categories of numbers do you keep in your db??
