Education Subject of Study

Hello. Regarding querying for Subject of Study under Relationships->Education. Is there no better way to do it than by selecting from a preset list as pictured below?



There are hundreds of different subjects and it's a nightmare to scroll through the whole thing. It'd be much easier to have a search box, or 'contains', etc. Is this not a problem for most educational institutions that use RE?

Yes, it can be cumbersome to have this particular field as a drop-down, but it does make it more easily searchable, if you want to facilitate networking. I weeded down our table a few years ago, and would be happy to share it. It generally works pretty well, especially considering you can have more than one per degree, and there's also the comment field.

I'm with Usamah - we have almost 5000 entries in the Subject table and it would be so much easier to be able to do wildcard searches on this field. Sometimes the information in the other education fields doesn't paint the entire picture. If someone studied "German with music" then the department etc. is all likely to reflect German rather than music.


I'm on the UK version of RE and there's only one subject field per degree - is the multiple subject option that Alicia mentioned specific to the US version?

Hmm, maybe you need the education module to get the option for the multiple majors? Also, since you're calling it "field of study" that also doesn't match what we have. Is that a UK thing?

We definitely have the education/alumni module so I'm putting it down to the international version differences. We don't have the major/minor thing at all in RE, just one field for subject.

Actually I'm slightly jealous now... can you add as many majors and minors to the education record as you want or is there a limit? That would certainly make reporting much easier for awkward people like me who did actually do a major/minor or combined honours course!

I've never encountered a max. I've probably entered 5 or so majors without issue?

We do not have the Education module, but have the same options as Alicia.
