Membership Reports - This Calendar Year vs. Entering actual dates

I am creating a new "Membership Dues Reort" and I just noticed that if I select "This Calendar year" instead of entering the actual beginning and end dates for the report, I receive different values, the latter by date selection is actually greater than using "This calendar year".


Has anyone else noticed this.  Without having to go through all memberships via queries/pivots, can anyone tell me which is the most accurate?
