Tracking reasons for donations
Our organization wants to begin tracking the reasons donors are inspired to make contributions. We provide 3 reasons to choose from on our donation forms. Does anyone have an idea on the easiest method to capture these reasons during gift entry? We will want to do reporting on these reasons following the annual campaign. I'm thinking maybe a gift attribute? Thanks everyone.

I would use a gift attribute. Create a table of the 3 reasons so data entry just picks from the list.0

Thanks so much Joanne!

I would use appeal. I am curious why you are not considering appeal.

I would use appeal. I am curious why you are not considering appeal. We use the appeal to show why they gave. We can pull reports based on that appeal and see how many gave for that reason and when. I think it would be the easiest way to do so.

Hi Melissa - thanks for your idea. I didn't consider
an Appel code because for our Annual Campaign we use the Appeal
field to capture the solicitation method (personal ask, face to
face, email, mail, etc.) I should mention I would not have set it
up this way - I inherited it like that. Otherwise I would like to
use your suggestion.

I agree with JoAnn, I would use Gift Attribute. Why? It could be a appeal, but if the gift is unsolicited you want to add why. Gift Attribute is the best option. I have used it before in both data entry and reporting, and it works like a charm.

I guess my response for this would be different if I knew what the choices were. My assumption is that this is an online form and why you gave could be:
- I received an appeal in the mail, by email or by phone
- An employee/volunteer asked me to consider a gift
- Other
- I like your educational programming
- I think you help a lot of people/animals

Thanks or giving this such good
thought Melissa. It
is your second scenario, capturing donors interest area:-
Providing an inclusive environment for all.-
Closing the achievement gap & keeping our kids safe.-
Improving the health & well-being of our community.
Donors can select one or several reasons they give.Jeff

After reading this through completely, and seeing your choices, I think I would go with a gift attribute. Initially, I agreed with Melissa Graves in thinking an appeal would be best, but since you're already using that field to capture another piece of information, and your choices are also not something I think an appeal is best for either, I'm siding with the gift attribute votes.0

Thank you Heather! I have been using the gift
attribute for a few months now and its working well.Jeff Novak
