Importing MatchFinder results

Options
Greetings from Hanover College!

We recently subscribed to the MatchFinder service and just received our results.  According to support, we should dump the results into constituent attributes. The data file has a lot of information, a lot more than the 10 attributes I am being told to add.  To top it off, the results come in a .txt file, not a .csv that we are used to. I have never imported a text file.  Does anyone have any suggestions, as I am not happy with the responses from support?

Thanks!!

  • Hi Kristin-

If you open the text file, are there characters separating the values? I ask because if you were to open a CSV in a text editor, it would look like a TXT file. Similarly, the TXT file might be comma delimited in which case you can simply change the extension to CSV. Can you post a small screenshot of the TXT file replacing any sensitive information with dummy data?
  • The file is set up as tab separated.  I have reached out to the Blackbaud guy that sent the file, and he said there is a problem with the file. So its not just me! Yay!

  • Sounds like they are going to help you out. You could convert a tab delimited to a comma delimited, but I would follow the course you're following and tell them you want them to re-send the file in CSV or XLSX.

I would convert your .txt file into a .csv file.  You can do this by going to an empty excel document and importing the information in.  That way you can see exactly what will be imported, and what fields it is slated to be imported into.  If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me - I went through this last year when we were subscribed to this service.
