Documenting Planned Gifts without the Planned Gift Module

Options
I would like to know how other organizations document/enter planned gifts in Raiser's Edge without the Planned Gift module. If they are entered as a pledge, it throws our numbers off. If they are not entered into RE, it would be easy to lose information.  What are some other options?

  • Depending on what types of planned gifts, how you need to report on them and how your finance department books them (or doesn't), you might be able to enter them with a Gift Type of "Other" along with specific Gift Subtypes such as bequest, pooled income fund, CRAT, etc.

Or, enter as a pledge and use subtypes so you can exclude them from your reports.

For most of our bequests we do not have a dollar amount so not able to book in as a gift anyway. Josh's reply is good if you have that info.

We record ours in constituent attribute: Endowment Gift detail (ours go in that fund). Have a table with options like bequest, life insurance, designated beneficiary IRA, etc. Can record date and make any other notes in Comment field.

Discussion moved to Raiser's Edge forums. Thanks!

We also list them as type Other.  We then have a gift attribute on what type of planned gift.  Exp. Will/Bequest or Insurance Policy, etc.  When we went to hosting with NXT it included the planned giving type of gift.  This is good as one of these days I will move the planned gifts and use Other for Event and Incentive costs.

  • Thank you for the reply! That is a great idea about using the subtypes for pledges. I think I will start off with that since we already are putting them in as pledges. Then will filter out from the reports so that they don't look "overdue".
  • Thank you, Joshua – that is a great idea. Just
was not sure how to filter them out. Thanks for taking the time to
    answer my question .

We enter them as pledges with a pay date extremely far in the future (12/31/2200).  We have a variety of gift subtypes that we use to distinguish between the different types of planned gifts.

Hi Beth, we enter them as pledges, but with a gift subtype (of planned gift) that means we can easily exclude from our reports and queries when needed.

  • Thank you! I think we will try this out!
