Requesting help with Report totals that don't match (Summary & Gift Detail mismatch)

Options
I ran a Demographic and Statistical Summary report so I could look at 5 years of revenue (2013-2017). I then ran a Financial Gift Detail and Summary report for each of those years (5 reports in total, 1 for each year) to look at the details of each gift. I'm using the same Gift Query on both reports and I've quadruple-checked my report criteria; even though they're an exact match, the totals don't match. I am seeing consistent patterns of mismatching though; the Gift Detail report has consistently higher totals. When I looked into specific gifts that were not showing on the D&S Summary report but DO show on the Financial Gift Detail report, there is nothing on the Gift record present to explain why it's not pulling into the D&S Summary report.

Has anyone else seen something like this? Does anyone know what the culprit might be?

  • I can't really help you, but it sounds like something that a chat with support could solve.

Have you tried running a third report, like the Giving history for that year to see which

of your two reports likely has the correct total?

I haven't tried that yet but I will right now. Thanks for the suggestion!
  • Running a gift detail and summary report can be frustrating.  You have to be sure you know which gift types to include and make sure you are not double counting.

For instance, you would never include a recurring gift since that is a template and never booked to GL.  You would include a recurring gift pay-cash, and treat it like a cash payment and book them to GL as such.

If you are including pledges and pay-cash gift types, you will also double count unless you are only looking at the pledge balance.

    Hope that helps a little.

I've got all my Gift Types set so I'm only including outright gifts and commitments; no MG-Pay Cash or other Pay-Cash types. I do include Recurring Gift-Pay Cash. I've cross checked both Report criteria pieces and even printed them with the criteria details in case my eyes were playing tricks on me. I may have just been looking at this for too long and need to step away from it for a bit to get a fresh perspective. Thanks all!

The Demographic and Statistical Report does have some weird stuff in it.  I had that same problem when it came to the totals.  I even ended up going over it with an expert consultant with the same results.

If you are looking for Fund totals.I would suggest utlizing the Fund Comparison Summary report.  You can get very consistent numbers that match up with Gift Detail and Summary.  Those are my two go-to reports.
