When registering the name of a spouse into an event where the record holder is not attending, how do you reflect the spouses attendance in the events area of their record?

I'm assuming in your data setup, you typically only have one or the other spouse as a constituent record, and the other only exists as a relationship record, correct?


If that's the case, then in your scenario, I would personally argue that you should graduate the spouse to a full constituent record and record the event there, not on the spouse record who is not attending. 


My rule of thumb is that only one spouse needs to exist as a record unless there's a good reason. Having the other spouse attend an event solo would qualify as a good reason, at least for me.

I agree with Ryan, but if adding the spouse as a full constituent is not an option you could enter the main constituent as a Participant/do not register and enter (type in) the spouse as his/her guest/ registered and add a note, to explain why you did this.

We have registered them that way, however, it doesn't show up in their record that anyone participated in the event.

I just tested it on my side and it's showing up on the main constituents record under the Event tab. Are you running a query or looking directly in the constituent record?

Have to agree with this, As the way i look at it if they have attended an Event then they are "Prospect" in their own right and makes it a lot easier to track in the long run.

We add a record for the attendee at this point.


Both because they are a constituent in their own right once they do something other than be spouse of original constit AND because it makes it much easier to track historically that they attended the event...Let's say the spouse comes to an event.  Down the road, they become very involved in the org such that a full record would be required.  It's harder to go back to recreate their prior event involvement at that point.

I have received a lot of great feedback.  Thanks so much for everyone's comments.  While all comments were very helpful, the one comment that rang true was what Darrin Fitzgerald wrote, "if they have attended an Event then they are "Prospect" in their own right and makes it a lot easier to track in the long run."  I was more concerned about functional issues when I should have been looking at the "big picture."  Thanks again for everyone's help.  I really appreciate it!
