Canvassing

My organization is going to start canvassing sometime in the spring to collect monthly donors.  I wanted to see what other organizations out there are currently doing this and how you handle the data entry for reporting.  I am begin told that we have to report on the number of people that make the second monthly donation as well as different time periods in the future (6 months, 9 months...).  Currently for our organization when someone becomes a monthly donor the second monthly gift (and all gifts moving forward) are moved to a sustainer appeal and not the appeal that brought in the donation.  We also currently do not use recurring gifts as a way to track sustainers but they are entered as cash gifts.

 

I would like to hear how other organizations are tracking these types of gifts.

We don't canvas, but I have had to pull reports for similar situations (i.e. who from this campaign gave to a gift from another campaign). I do this in a series of queries and exports to narrow down who I'm looking for and what info I need. For example, I query first gift went to X campaign, then anyone who has given to any other campaign and merge those, then export to see when/what their next gift was to.

I think recurring gifts would be your best option. Have a look at the sample reports under Reports/ Pledge and Recurring gift reports. I have attached one of them

I assume your monthly gifts are actual payments, not pledges. (You cannot apply Pledges toward Recurring gifts)
