Merged Primary Salutation (after choosing correct salutation in Integration Options) -- why didn't it work?

Options
Hi, I sent an online express email to myself (not a test) using the merge field "Primary Salutation," which I mapped in Integration Options to a custom salutation called Ind Salutation. First I sent it when I did not have a Ind Saluation filled in on my RE record. Of course, the result was "Hi !" with no merged field (would be nice if there was a way to say, "if blank, then choose ___" but I digress). Then I updated my record to have data in my Ind Saluation field. I used the template from the previous email and sent it to myself. By all accounts I can tell, it should have included my Ind Salutation with is entered as "Amanda" but again it came through as, "Hi !" with no merged field.

What could be happening? Do I need to refresh the query in the database where I chose myself, the one I used in my recipient list, so it updates the data from my record?

I do know (from experience, although it's been over a year) that once you schedule a message for sending, the lists/queries don't change.  At my last org, a coworker in Marketing was putting together a message and I was simultaneously entering data in RE of constituents and email addresses.  We had a dynamic query for the list, but she finished first and we decided she could schedule the message to go out the next morning, by which time I would have the data entry completed.  She did, and I did, but none of the emails I entered in RE after she scheduled the message received the message.  After some investigating, I learned that when you send OR schedule a message, OLX runs the query and essentially saves the list as a static list within OLX.  It does not refresh the queries/list at the scheduled time.

It worked! Thank you for your advice, Jen!
