Recurring Gifts Reports

What is the best way to capture the number of recurring gift constituents as of a given period of time?  I'm not sure if the journal report vs. activity report makes the most sense.

The way you worded your question it sounds like you are looking for a list of constituents. You can certainly use the Journal or Activity report (or even Gift Detail and Summary report) as all of those reports can be constrained to look at only Recurring Gifts. You can also use a Gift or Constituent query by specifying the Gift Type as One Of Recurring Gift or Recurring Gift Pay-Cash and constrain the Gift Date to the time period you are interested in. Below is a query example looking for the pledge portion of the Recurring Gift (and not the Pay-Cash portion).
