Can you share what standard Annual Fund reports you use and how you capture them in RE?  Not sure retention is an option as we are an Independent School and typically lose donors once children graduate (IE parent donors).  However, willing to be enlightened.

I think you might have to specify a little more, what you are trying to accomplish.

The giving detail and summary report under Financial Reports is pretty versatile.

Agreed -- you need to be more specific on what you are trying to report on.  I have worked at a few schools and their AF reports requests are similar but also different.  And depending on what you are looking for dictates what reports/queries/exports are going to get you your info.
