Does anyone have a great way to track volunteers hours in RE without using the Volunteer Module?

Before purchasing the Volunteer Module we tracked volunteers hours by creating a gift batch.  The gift type woud equal gift in kind (GIK), fund # would reference the number assigned to GIK, appeal equals 18FY-VolHours and gift reference would reference the number hours at hourly wage (22 @  $23.07)
