Survey doesn't display opt-in/opt-out field

Options

Just set up a survey and embedded it in this page:

It includes a "Constituent registration info" block to capture names and emails w/out requiring registration. In set-up, that block has "Additional Constituent Record Fields" which include email opt-in and opt-out with the options "requested" and "default." I checked both, assuming this would actually display a pre-checked checkbox but I don't see it in my form. Am I missing something? The header says the choices will display on the form ("Defines more constituent information and email opt-in fields to display on this survey and determines if the survey taker must enter a response in each field"). Why am I not seeing them? I don't want to sign people on without their permission, and if they all come in as opt-out then I'm missing possible contacts for my list!

  • So I guess I got got by one of the innumerable Convio gotchas. In this case, since the system had logged me in at some point, the fields don't show in my test browser. Which I probably would have figured out sooner except that they also don't show up when I preview the dratted thing on the admin side. So as far as I could tell they just weren't there. I mean, when I preview something, I expect to see it as the regular unlogged-in VISITOR is going to see it, f'r cripesake.

  • bbennett - this is probably because you are logged in. A recent upgrade to Convio last fall changed the behavior of the opt-in checkbox to not display if the user viewing the page is logged in. Only non-logged in/new people will see the checkbox. To verify this, try either logging out of your site (as a user, not as an administrator) or clearing your cookies and viewing the page again.

I looked at your page and I do indeed see the opt in/opt out checkbox, which is what you intended. I think you can breathe easy here.

    Let me know what happens!

I put a screenshot below so you can see what I saw, not being logged in.

Yes, thanks Sally. As per my previous, I figured that out when I checked on a 3rd browser that I wasn't logged in on. It's a reasonable enough feature but I never would have expected it to apply in the previews on the admin side as well. You have to be logged in to work on the site, but that doesn't mean you want the previews to show you logged-in-mode versions of everything!

I'm also surprised to know that this applies to administrative-initiated previews, and I'll make sure to draw attention to it here at Convio.

The preview has always shown the logged in version. What would be ideal is if you could toggle between the two so you could preview both states without turning the page live.
