If you opt out of a parent interest, does it opt you out of the children?

I am curious how people use parent/child relationships in interests? We were under the impression that if you have a parent interest called pets and two children interests (cats and dogs) that subscribing or unsubscribing from pets would subscribe or unsubscribe you from cats and dogs. In testing it seems that that is not the case. Can someone tell me what their experience has been?
