Purpose of Credit Card Type Thumbnails?

We are converting to Convio from GetActive and have been setting up our donation forms, which include the thumbnails of the different credit card types with radio buttons to select one. However, in our testing, we are finding that there's no editing of the card type against the card number -- which is something we are used to. If there's a mismatch between the card type and the card number (say card type selected is Discover, which should begin with 6, but card number entered is Visa, no error comes up, and on the transaction summary, it shows Visa. We would expect the edit to happen on the donation form, with an error message in the right hand section.

So...we are wondering if others have gotten this edit to work? And if not, what's the utility of the thumbnails?
