Convio WYSIWYG interface: browser compatibility

Options

Friends,

I would love to use the Convio WYSIWYG pagebuilder interface on my laptop when not in the office, but there is a problem.

I'm using Internet Explorer 8 (version 8.0.60001.18702). The WYSIWYG editor seems to be available, but the editing box where I should see the page is completely blank.

I also have Firefox 3.0.10, but the WYSIWYG editor isn't available.

And I have Google Chrome 2.0.172.30, which suffers the same problem as FF.

I have NO desire to rollback my installation of IE to 7.

Is Convio compatible with IE8?

  • I don't know about IE8, but I use a plugin for FireFox called IE Tab that enabled me to use the WYSIWYG editor.

Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) was made generally available in March 2009 and has known compatibility issues with displaying some web sites.  Convio is working on issues associating with IE8, and will deploy them when these issues have been resolved and tested.

In the meantime, there are two Microsoft Knowledge Base articles that describe solutions for IE8 compatibility issues.  The article, Some Web sites may not be displayed correctly or work correctly in Windows Internet Explorer 8, describes how to use the IE8 Compatibility View.  This view suppresses new IE8 features and displays the website as it would be displayed in IE7.

If you would like to revert to a previous version of Internet Explorer, see How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?

  • Jonathan,

To build on what Jeff wrote, when you go to the admin login page using Internet Explorer 8 with Compatibility Mode disabled, you see the following message: "Note: Your browser is not fully compatible with the Convio administrator tools."

In my brief testing using IE8 on Windows XP SP3, I was able to see the WYSIWYG editor as expected, so it may be possible to get it to work by modifying your settings. Some things you may want to try:

    • Add your Convio admin site to the Trusted sites zone
    • Turn off the pop-up blocker
    • Toggle Compatibility View (

If any of these steps change what you're seeing, I'm sure other users would be interested in knowing what worked for you. If you're not able to get it working, we'd recommend using a browser version that has been tested for full compatibility with the current version of the Convio administrator tools.

Nate, IE Tab is a great plugin, but I don't believe it would help with what Jonathan is describing. The current WYSIWYG editor requires Microsoft ActiveX, so it only works in Internet Explorer, not Firefox or Chrome. IE Tab effectively runs an instance of Internet Explorer within a Firefox tab. If the WYSIWYG isn't working in a stand-alone Internet Explorer browser, I wouldn't expect it to be any different when IE is embedded in Firefox.

    I hope this is helpful!

Oh yeah, you're right. IE Tab uses whatever version of IE  you have on your system. I have IE 7; that's why it works for me.

I'd like to add that displaying graphic content within the admin site is causing another message from IE8. In the case of editing email messages that contain images, IE may throw this security warning at you: Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely? This webpage contains content that will not be delivered using a secure HTTPS connection, which could compromise the security of the entire webpage. YES/NO

I've tried to get rid of this - using suggestions above - but to no avail. I've had a hard time seeing graphics consistently. And I do believe IE7 displayed a security warning similar to the one above when previewing a page.

The mixed content warning is caused by the fact that the absolute reference to images in the email are non-secure, and the Convio admin interface is secure. The simple solution is to just click the option indicating you wish to view both secure and non-secure content (e.g. in IE8 this would be "No"), otherwise, the only workaround would be to make all absolute references to images secure.

  • You might also consider getting your organization's name on the list for the new TinyMCE-based WYSIWYG editor.  There is a process involved, and there are impacts to existing content and all that, but, at least in the case of my organization, the transition was about as seemless as it can get.  We had the added advantage of already being very familair with TinyMCE (our CMS uses it), so that was helpful.  If you're not familiar, the gist is the new editor is cross-browser compatible (meaning it works in IE7&8, FF, Chrome, Safari... etc).  Personally, I think it's WAY better than the old one across the board...  One thing I wish Convio would do is provide customer access to the TinyMCE plug-in framework since I can think of a number of handy extensions to the core Convio functionality, like, for example, grabbing external content -- maybe from a Yahoo! Pipe, or just an RSS feed, etc...  even if it's as simple as the ability to customize what options are available and where they appear, or the icons...  But... I digress....

KEv, to your point -- if you set the domain of your Convio admin tool to be in your "Intranet" zone (NOT your Trusted Sites zone -- weird... yes, but Intranet is lower security than Trusted in IE) you won't get any of those errors.   (that is to say, you will get them, but you won't get the popup telling you about them, it will just show up with an unlocked icon and say "Mixed Content" as your zone.)

  • Hi all,

I've downloaded this plug in for FF that was mentioned in this discussion:

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

Thanks for the link, but sadly this is for older versions of FF.  Is there anything for newer versions?

Convio fully supports FireFox with WYSIWYG functionality now, so there's no need.  You simply need to covert over to the TinyMCE editor in Convio.  You should do it, it's much better anyway.  You'll need to work through you account rep or Convio support to get that ball rolling.

Michael's absolutely right that you should have the new TinyMCE editor turned on for your site.

Meanwhile, there is another FireFox add-on called Coral IE Tab that is compatible with FireFox 3.6:
