How do you (if you do) use Membership Types?

While create a donation report, I saw options for filtering on Membership Type. Not having heard of this before, I went to research it where I found this help page. My question is how do you use it and does anyone use it in conjuction with an offline database?

Usually Membership Types are used to identify tiers of active members. For example if you donate 1.00 - 50.00 you are in the Bronze Membership, 51.00 - 100.00 you are in the silver membership, and so on. You can filter these memberships into groups as well so you can target them specifically in email and ask campaigns.
