One Couple/Constituent Record with Two Different Active Memberships - help!!

Options
We have a Constituent who's spouse is on the record as a relationship. Together, for many years, they had joint memberships with our organization. This was fine until the Constituent became a special lifetime member of our organization and the spouse did not. The spouse opted to continue to purchase memberships as an individual but unfortunately this was not recorded correctly so our problem is that currently, we have one record with two separate active memberships and we are now unable to print this new card for the individual spouse membership as she is listed as joint on this new single person membership on the original Constituent record. Is there a way to "break out" the spouse's record and maintain all the history? Would it be better to break out the Constituent's recently changed "new" lifetime membership and retain all the records with the Spouse? We are just in the process of developping best practices and cleaning up our database so any recommedations would help.

Thanks!
