Policy or Procedure on how to handle constituents with an organizational relationship that have retired.

Does anyone have a policy or procedure on how to handle constituents that have an organizational relationship but have retired? We seem to have a lot of constituents who fall into that category but are handled differently within our database. I would like to standardize the process. Thanks so much!

I add the word Retired in front of the Position (ie: Retired Branch Manager), change the relationship to Former Employer and change the reciprocal to Retired.  If I know the date of retirement I add that in the Date to field, but typically I just leave that blank.  Finally, I uncheck the Employee and Primary business information check boxes.  (And don't forget to check to see if the constituent has matching gifts.  If the employer doesn't match retirees, you have to uncheck the matches gifts checkbox on the General 2 tab)

We handle this much the same as we do when someone leaves a job for any reason. We'll mark the relationship Former Employer / Former Employee and erase the title and put that back in notes along with any other information that could be useful. It is important to keep track of these past organizational relationships because your prospect probably has contacts there still who could help you out with the relationship if the organization is also a prospect or donor.

    I hope this helps.

Hello, we also add "Ret." in front of the person's Position Description, but in order for Phonathon to pull employer details for retired constituents as well, we keep the Relationship = Current Employeer and Reciprocal = Retired Employee.  That way we don't bring in all former employers, but are able to reflect a 'former' employer if the person has retired from there.

    My best,

    Jane
