Disallowing Returning Teams

I created a TeamRaiser for an event for 2017, that is associated with the same event in 2016. 


I allowed my constituents to return to their original teams from 2016. However, it is making kind of a mess when it comes to placing them in their proper divisions. 


The divisions have changed names, so the teams have no option to select the division they would like to be in upon sign up, so they end up in limno with no division selected. They can change this in their team page but they probably dont know there is an issue or an option to do this.


If I deselect "allow returning teams to register", what will happen to the returning teams who have already registered for 2017? Will they remain unchanged? I'm apprehensive to attempt it because I do not want anything negative to happen to their experience on their end.
