Adding a Bar Code Scan to a Gift Batch

Hello RE Users, I am trying to revamp our workflow processes for gift intake.  Currently we are not using lockbox. We have a very labor and antiquated process in place for mail intake and gift processing.  To give you a quick summary.  Every year we have our annual Bishops campaign.  we receive packets from each parish weekly with individual checks for the campaign in progress.  I would like to just bar code each packet/transmittal and scan the scan line into the Gift batch so that i have reference for that envelope/transmittal.  Has anyone done something similar to this process? if so i would welcome any advice you might have.
