Divorced Constituents

How do other organziations handle divorced constituents? Currently we change thier status to divorced but we leave the ex tied to that record. This makes our party planner a bit crazy when I pull lists that still have an exes name listed! I'm wondering if we should just set up a separate records for the ex-spouse and delete them from their ex's record.

The each have their own record anyways so we unlike them as spouses and link them in the relationship tab as ex-spouses.

We change relationship to former spouse and uncheck spouse box.  Are you unchecking the spouse box or what type of list are you pulling that would pull ex-?  I would think you could change way list is pulled to prevent that.

Some other things: make sure their addresses are unlinked, change their addressee/salutations if needed, uncheck the 'auto-soft credit' option on their relationship record

We change them to Ex, remove spouse check, change the addressee/salutation (on both records if they each have one) and if there are any soft credit gifts (between the records) within the current FY we usually remove those as well

We have an entire program for divorcing couples, and registration for that used to be run through RE.  So we have a lot of this.  And it's not particularly clean or consistent. 


If both parties have constituent records, then the Relationship Link is maintained, unchecking the Spouse box, changing the Type/Reciprocal to Spouse - Former and adding dates if we know them (on the Relationship).  Gifts are reviewed for Soft Credits, the Automatically Soft Credit option is unchecked, Addr/Sals are reviewed, and the Donor Listing Attribute on both records is adjusted as appropriate.  Addresses are also adjusted as needed and the Marital Status is changed to Divorced.


If we have a divorce with only one constituent record then we have to determine whether the relationship between the non-constituent and the org is enough to elevate that relationship to a full constituent record.  The same data is reviewed, except soft credits which aren't applicable.

We uncheck the spouse box and change the relationship type to "former spouse." The person most involved with our organization is always the main record. We only create another record if the former spouse gives a gift or continues involvement.

It sounds like you are saying that only one spouse has a record?? If this is a correct interpretation of your question.  Then I would make the Ex- into their own Constituent record.  You don't have to start from scratch, you can open what you have and in the drop down say you want to Add as Constituent.  Then fill in the areas that are missing.  Both records should be linked, but not as Spouses and the Relation/Recip should be Ex-Wife/Husband/Spouse.


If your people already have separate Constit records that are linked, uncheck the Spouse box and change the Relation/Recip to Ex-
