Job Assignments and Import ID's

I use RE for volunteer management and after recently taking over I have noticed many job duplications. When I pull a job assignment report instead of seeing a position listed once, I see it many times. I'm hoping to clean up this historical data my merging these old records with a new Import ID and positons title that will be used consistenly moving forward, so that I can pull clean concise reports that compare year over year. Any suggestions?

Jobs are event specific, so you may have "ticket taker" listed 3 times, Ticket Taker @ Event 1, Ticket Taker @ Event 2, Ticket Taker @ event 3.  I KNOW this makes NO sense what-so-ever.  When we first started using the module it took us forever to figure it out.

Thanks Elaine! We run events at our organizations, but a lot of our volunteer positions are regular and on-going. Wish my luck on my journey to pull a pretty report Thank you for the info.
