Default Sets

I am trying to create 'Spouse Defaults' (a default set) having the field name 'Last Name' and then setting it to the constituents last name.  Our setup shows Nickname and Maiden Name for spouse and a place to put a value but not the last name.  If this field could be added I would then need to know what to put in 'Default Value' to get the primary constituents last name in there. Apologies if this has been a thread in the past - I could not find anything on this.

Are you setting these up as non-constituent records? If so, there isn't a default for the last name but when you are in the new record you can hit F3 to have the last name auto-fill. (FYI, this only works if it's a spouse record. Any other individual record won't duplicate the last name).

Just a note of caution around using F3 to generate the last name:

• If for some reason you later want to decouple them (name change, divorce, etc.) there's no way (that I've found) to actually turn that off.  I've actually had to entirely delete the spousal record and recreate in order for the last names to no longer be linked.
• If you've used F3, it's not really visible that you've done this -- so I've had staff inadvertently change the spouse to a hyphenated last name not knowing that it would change the last name of the other spouse.  
  • So for Mr. Smith and Ms. Smith-Jones, he's been changed to Mr. Smith-Jones!  
  • I now make sure to check hyphenated last names on male spouses.

Is this also caused by the business rule (Config > Business Rules > first one under Constituent Options)?  I didn't use F3 for years and found that last names were changing for me when I entered different last name for spouse, with or without a hyphen.  Found that in initial set up the box was checked to change it.  Wonderful option for correcting typos but pain when it changed unexpectedly.

We will be using this in large batches where
we have highly detailed entries and it is certain the spouses have
identical last names… sounds like it’s a good idea to test several
thereby knowing the ramifications.

Joann - Brilliant, don't think I even knew this was there!  I guess I always thought it was just from using the F3.  I'll definitely UNCHECK this most unhelpful option!!!

I've debated back and forth whether is best to have it unchecked or checked.  I've left it checked most of the time.  It's 6 of one and half dozen of the other.  Remember to check/fix spouses with different last names or check/fix when correcting mistake in name.

It's definitely the Business Rule, not the F3 function.  I just tested to double-check.  I already have an audit process for checking unmatched last names, so I don't have that BR turned on, but I use F3 often.
