Opt Outs and Bounces

Options
Hi, me again!

We have a whole bunch of bounces and opt outs from the last e-mail that was sent.    Is there a better way than the suggested manual way of updating the e-mails to be be inactive?

  • My process: First I run a query for the bounced email addresses to see if we have an alternate email address for those constituents. There's not too many of those, so I manually change them. Next, I have a couple queries tied to a couple global changes. I globally mark the "prefers no email" box for opt outs and globally change the bounces to a bounced email phone type. Finally, I have a volunteer look through another query with recent bounced email type additions to catch any obvious misspellings that might have caused the email to bounce.

  • this is awesome Sunshine! Thank you! Can I ask how you then deal with the prefers no email people? Do you just exclude them from your next mail out query? At the moment we use the DNC box but as we use more and more communications I will need to move away from this so that those that just unsubscribe from the newsletter can still receive event invitations etc. Any suggestions here?

PS: Will put those queries / global changes on my list of things to do for this month!! Thank you!

I use the "Requests no email" box on the Bio 1 tab, and exclude them from the email lists. I am interested in how others record constituents who would only like to receive certain types of emails. A solicit code or attribute might work for that.

  • I do much the same as what Sunshine said.  But I don't bother with the Requests No Email checkbox.  Nor do I use the DNC, Inactive, or Primary functions.  I do it all with Phone Types.  For me, it's cleaner and easier, because of the way those fields are available (or rather not so useful) in Query.  Here are my Phone Types:

We are starting a new, separate, eNewsletter in a few months.  My plan is to create a new Phone Type and enter duplicate Phone Numbers.  Because if someone has more than one email address, but only signed up for this eNewsletter with one of them, I need a way to do that with as little room for error as possible and as little fuss as possible.
