Migrating Recurring Donors to new Payment Processor

Options
Hello!

Looking for some advice/folks with any experience changing payment processors and how to effectively (and efficiently) move recurring gift information.

I found this great string on BBMS vs IATS but the questions about moving recurring gifts was not addressed (https://community.blackbaud.com/forums/viewtopic/147/16179?post_id=69498#p69498)

Anyone deal with this?

I'm assuming it is a manual processes due to PCI compliance and the payment processor/merchant account/whatever that piece is called that handles the credit card processing stores the cards and we do not have access to that information within Luminate

We are thinking of moving to BBMS, bottom line we want to leave our current vendor (ClearCommerce)

Thoughts?!

  • We only had 4 when we moved, so we just contacted those donors and worked with them to cancel on the old system and create new on the new system.  No one had a problem with this, since we explained that we were switching processors and to protect the privacy/security of their credit card information, we don't have access to that information and can't do it without them.  One of them, who initially gave his information via phone and doesn't do the email/internet thing, just gave his information via phone again, and we set it up in the back end (i.e. in RE instead of Online Express).  The others were given the option of doing that (phone) or of going to our new Donation Page (from OLX) and setting it up new, there.  Our old processor did allow me to stop the old recurring gifts without the donors having to go do that, as well.

If you have a lot, perhaps you can set up a specific Donation Page (I don't know much about LO) for these folks, send them an email, and ask them to go to that page and set up their gift again.  I would suggest contacting one or a couple of these donors that you know well, and asking them to be your guinea pigs to test the process and provide feedback.
  • Good advice Jen (as always!)  :)

We have about 200 monthly donors, so it will be a process for us. We are not switching tomorrow but I'm trying to figure out a path to get it done.

The special donation page has promise...something to think about.

And testing it is always a great way to go.
