Membership Auto-renwals

Still waiting for an auto-renew option for the Membership pages, but in the mean time I'm thinking about creating a regular donation page with the recurring gift option set that only allows annual gifts that matches up to our membership levels. 


Has anyone done this? I'm worried that people will select a January 1 recurring gift and not get charged for several months. 


Also, does anyone know if this function will become avaliable for Membership pages soon?
