Policy for sharing data from RE

Options
Hello,

I tried all sorts of permutations of - Policy for sharing data from RE with external groups - in the search field but nothing came back that spoke to what I am trying to find out. I'm really looking for legal and best practice procedures for sharing data from our alumni database. If another department on campus asks for a list of donors with their mailing addresses, is that information that we can legally share? What data is considered private and what data, if any, is considered public? Certainly our annual report contains names and giving levels, but are there legal or best practices that guide decisions for releasing any/all information about our donors.

Thanks so much for your help.

Pat, to me there is a difference between 'external groups' and 'another department.'  I would generally expect that my university would be able to share my address info with departments of the U.  I would like to assume they don't share giving info.  Providing to an interenal group to me is totally different than selling names in db.  That goes against Donor Bill of Rights. I'm not a lawyer so don't know legalities and they could even be different state to state.

For more input I suggest you post your question at fundsvcs.org for wider audience of fundraisers than RE users. Or ask a lawyer.
