query for NON-DONOR Couples

Options
I'm working on segments for a mailing with non-donor alum couples being the top segment.  I can get non-donor couples easily enough using constituent and spouse education.  I can get non-donor on the constituent, but how can I assure that the 'spouse' is also a non-donor?   If I pick up a non-donor alum, I need to guarantee that his/her spouse is also a non-donor.  I'm not sure how to do that through a query.

  • I don't believe you can do through query.

If you export your non-donor Alums and in the export include spousal summary giving, you can then determine which spouses also have no giving.

    Not easy or graceful, though

Assuming that you utilize soft crediting between spouses.  You could merge queries and have an exclusion query to pull out the spouses with with soft credits aka donors, so that you are left with only non donors.

We soft credit the spouse for gifts.  However, some gifts could have been entered before they were married or even married to another individual on our system.  What seems to work the best is once you have a non-donor query,  Export it to excel.  You can list what the spouse gave along with the spouse ID number.  You can then determine if the spouse needs to be added to the non-donor query or the non-donor excluded.  You can create new queries with the ID numbers from the excel list.  Then simply merge the queries.  It takes some manipulation but it is worth it as we want the appeal on both married alums records but only want to send one letter addressed to the married couple.
