Earned Titles (Dr. , The Rev. etc.)

Options
This is our first year of using RE for our Honor Roll.  Some sections of the report (like the class giving section), list the donor as "Dr. Jane (Smith) Jones '82".  However, if she is not a doctor and just a regular old married person her title is 'not earned' and therefore should not be included (not my rules!!)  In the case where she is married, she would be "Jane (Smith) Jones '82".  (where Smith is her maiden name)

So, I'm thinking of creating a salutatoin type, but I only want to use the Title if it is 'earned'.

I'm thinking of moving earned titles to the Title 2 field and un-earned titles to Title 1.  Then, for this particular salutation/addresses type, I can use Title 2 (which should only be populated with earned titles).

Any thoughts?

We have an Addressee/Salutation type of "Honor Roll" so we can specify how it should be listed. You could do a global add of "First (Maiden) Last Class" and then run a query for those who have a title of Dr., Rev., etc and do a global change to include the Title.

  • Amy, your reply is appreciated.  I'm new to RE, so your 'global add' suggestion intrigues me.  Can I globally add a new salutation type?  I figured I would have to do an import ...

Ditto, adding a addressee type for the recognition.  So much easier than trying to run two titles. While that may work, I can see it being a pain to maintain. We also use an addressee for our recognition lists.  Note - organizations have to be handled differently as there's no option for addressee.  We use an alias.  Some use an attribute.

(Yes, you can do a global add.  If it's new to you, check out the knowledgebase - search for something like how to do a global add.)

Here's the specific Knowledgebase article: https://kb.blackbaud.com/articles/Article/52574

And if you don't use the Knolwedgebase, check it out. I use it ALL THE TIME and I've been an RE user for nearly 15 years.

I get what you are trying to do -- and they are not your rules --  I just find it funny that there are Titles listed on some (earned) and not all.  Makes for a very inconsistent looking list for Honor Roll.  Every org I have been at has either chosen that everyone has a title or no one has a title.  Those that have earned a title -- their suffix is used, not their title.  So that the honor roll would be formatted Firstname MaidenName Last Name, Ph.D. '81

The suggestion for global add would be the way to go.  With the P.S. that I would just add the title to Title 2 but also leave it in Title 1 so that when you pull mailings lists etc. you and others will not have to remember there are two title fields to pull/merge.

Gets even more complicated.  For the Honor Role we code an additional addressee We only do this if it is different from the Primary Addressee.  We usually do not use the suffix as it is hard to maintain all the different possible types of degrees.  In addition, when we list only some as Ph.D and others as M.D. and a tittle of Dr. when we don't know which it is we have had complaints as some think their degree is move important then others.  So we list as Dr., Mr., Mrs, Ms, Sister (we are a higher Ed Catholic education orgainization) etc.  Some donors have asked to not have any tittles at all and we honor those wishes.  As much as we would like it a one size fits all, we follow our donors wishes.
