multi-step donation form?

I'm curious if anyone out there has tested/is using a multi-step donation form as illustrated on these pages:

Thanks very much,

  • Interesting post.

I'm in the process of building a landing page that uses sort of a similar idea.

We really borrowed this idea from Children's Hospital of L.A.'s Make March Matter campaign, and I think it's really serving as more of a super Donate Now button on a content heavy landing page, rather than a simple donation form splash page like these are.

We did test a two-page against a one-page form some time ago, which leaned slightly toward the single page. I don't think we've ever done a three page form. Interesting that this splashpage - page1 - page2 format is how Luminate Donation forms are out of the box. I've always discounted the whole idea of THREE pages as silly, and it seems like conventional wisdom had pointed to a single short-as-you-can-make-it form as ideal.

I wonder how a splash page and a reasonably short page 2 would test against the full on three pages. I can understand the graphic appeal of these splash pages, and those are really all this article emphasises, but I'm not so sure about clicking through two more pages on mobile (plus several more if you offer PayPal.) Does four more fields of CC info seem worse than an entire additional page? I can see four more darn fields right there, but with a next page button I can't tell how much there is to go, and impatiently anticipate another gazillion fields.

  • Thanks for your reply, Brian! Really interesting to hear about your experiences and take on the multi-step process. We have a few two-page forms but generally have one-page forms.

I'm very interested in how different designs, layouts and steps could influence donors and would love to hear from others about this!

  • We  are also doing a test with a similar two step process. The test has the option of one-time gift or monthly and then the amount choices only. The amount choices change when the one-time option is chosen vs. the monthly. This is the first time we have been able to figure out a way to have the two choices on one form but the back end has the two forms for receipting purposes and cross references. The test goes out in September so we will know the results soon. If this test works, we roll this out with all our donation forms. It is a much cleaner look.
