Subdomains, domains, and default URLs

Subdomains and domains

A domain is the main part of a URL.  So if a URL is “www.savepuppiesandkittens.org”  the domain portion of that is “savepuppiesandkittens”.

A subdomain is the initial part of a URL.  So if a URL is “www.savepuppiesandkittens.org”  the subdomain portion of that is “www”.

A subdomain does not have to be “www” although it is on most web pages.  Many GA clients do not use Convio as their content provider or they use WSM as their content provider.  In either case their main content uses “www.savepuppiesandkittens.org” but their COM/CRM content uses “donate.savepuppiesandkittens.org” or “friends.savepuppiesandkittens.org”, etc.

A URL is the composite of the subdomain.domain.org (or com, or net, etc.).

Default GA and Convio URLs

Almost all clients on GA use the GA default hostname.  On GA a URL using a default GA hostname starts with something like either “https://secure.ga6.org/” or “http//ga6.org/”.

Generally Convio does not recommend using the Convio default hostname.  An example of a default hostname on Convio is “http://es.convio.net”.
