Luminate Online and sales for ticketed events

Options
We are just going through our implementation of Luminate Online and so don't have any capacity to try this now..... I was asked by one of my events people if LO could be used to sell tickets online for ticketed events? Is anyone out there doing this?

Thanks for any feedback.

  • Sure. We've done this using a simple donation form and gift tiers. You can customize the tier names, so it can look like:

    [  ] One Ticket......$10
    [  ] Two Tickets.....$20
    [X] Ten Tickets.....$100

But of course, the user is limited to the quantities that you provide (and would have to use the form twice to get three tickets.)

The other option we use is the eCom module. This is great for allowing an arbitrary quantity, and also allows you to offer multiple ecom products for tickets, raffle entries, dinner, etc. that can be paid for all in one transaction. It is a bit more complicated to build an ecom site than a simple donation form though.

EDIT: ECom can also track inventory, so it works for events with limited seating.

Thanks Brian. Since I asked the question I have done a bit of digging in LO and see what some of the possibilities are. I am going to take a look at a few other orgs to see what the look and feel of the for the user might be like.

  • Hi Robert,

I helped the Scleroderma Foundation set this site up for their National Patient Education Conference using the LO events module.

They've been using the events module for about 4 years now for their registration. It allows them to have people register for the multi-day conference and then sub-conferences or events (i.e. children's sessions or receptions). We also have different ticket types set-up (i.e. early bird vs. regular registration) so we turn off the early bird once that date comes and turn on the regular registration ticket price to show up.

One thing I don't like about the ticketed events is that if you buy multiple tickets and need names for each additional guest, you have to add an additional question to capture those names, and if people don't respond, you need to follow-up. I wish there was a way to automatically have that be a part of the ticket purchasing process if you buy more than one ticket. Scleroderma Foundation forces the ticket purchaser to do each registration separate then to capture the information they need since they have a lot of info for each conference attendee they want to collect.

Scleroderma Foundation also uses Events for events that don't require a purchase (i.e. support group meetings), like this instance.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for this. I am always glad to get worked examples (links) to existing pages that show how these features work. As we get into LO I will keep you in mind if specific questions come up.

  • Hi Robert,

We use it for our American Diabetes Association Father of the Year "associating" the ticketed event instance to a teamraiser by 'mapping/referencing' the value of the ticket event id to an unused field inside of "Identify Location Details" within the Teamraiser configuration which value could be retrieved by the S-tag in order of us to make a dynamic association for the navigation pertinent to it.

Most of the actual events are currently closed for this year (most of them ended this month) -- thus if you click on "purchasing ticket" you'll be greeted with "sorry event has passed" message, but here is a prototype event instance to demonstrate the flow

  • This could be very helpful as we get into TeamRaiser and Luminate. Thanks Daniel.

Interesting that you did it like this with Team Raiser. My consultant also said this was a possibility and in looking at your form it does not at all look like a Team Raiser so I am intrigued because while we use the event forms, we do NOT use it for events where we need guest names. However I don't see that you are collecting guest names here either. Have you tried to do that if someone buys more than 1 ticket? We have a gala coming up that I need to decide how to sell online tickets but I want the guest names associated with the number of tickets purchased. Any specific things I need to watch out for or should consider before diving in to this? Look forward to any further input.

    Thanks, Karen

  • Hi Robert:

We use the Events in Luminate Online for our galas, luncheons, paddle tournaments, kick-off events, cocktail parties, you name it.  It is the best thing!  You can set up your event and have multiple ticket prices, table prices, sponsorships, or single ticket or none at all, just an RSVP.  You can even include questions like who are your guest names, table name, etc. And if you set the event up in Raisers Edge, you can map the LO event to the RE event.  When you process the registrations in the connector, it also adds the information to the event in RE Events.

I just put un an event this morning if you would like to look at the event set up. http://support.stamfordhospitalfoundation.org/site/Calendar?id=100741&view=Detail

    Good luck.

    Hi Christina,

I must ask - are you a paid employee designing HTML pages for the org.? Do you work in Luminate? I am trying to dig into Luminate Events module to replace our usage of Eventbrite, and at the moment I'm struggling to see how to get from my events pages to something that looks like yoru events page. Yours is fantastic.

Seconding Lucas's inquiry! We use the standard (classic view) offering in the Events module, and have a number of issues with both the RSVP-only and the ticketed events pages, look-and-feel.

We've never changed to the so-called "Modern" layout because there are issues with this as well (apparently related to our page wrapper, so support says), but uncorrected at this time.

Here's an upcoming ticketed event as an example: http://cjp.convio.net/site/Calendar?id=104704&view=Detail. Although having the registration on several screens (as the Scleroderma Foundation does) would not be my first preference, overall the look and feel and action of their reg pages is so much better than ours! I hope Christina responds.
