CR Error

Has anyone ever gotten the error "Failed to Open document" when trying to open (to edit) a report in Crystal?  I don't know what it means and the Knoweldgebase has nothing.

  • When loading from the Reports menu in RE; sometimes our RE will "default" to looking in the samples instead of the network location where all our datafiles and CR reports are stored. I just re-link to the correct path.
  • Is this a custom report?  If so, it can mean that the MDB file that the report is trying to access is locked (the Export may not be complete or may have failed leaving the MDB file open, or that someone else is accessing the MDB file).
  • Looks like knowledgebase article #52484 might help:

This issue may occur due to one of the following reasons:
    1. The report file ([reportname].rpt) itself is corrupted. Restore a previous version of the report file from a backup if possible. If transferring the file itself to another location is causing the corruption, then zip up the original file before transferring it. If there is no other version of the file available and it is in fact corrupted, then the report will have to be recreated from scratch.
    2. The report file was saved in a newer version than the application being used to open it. For example, trying to open a report saved in Crystal XI (11) with the Crystal 8.5application. The Crystal Reports vendor changed the report file format with Crystal reports (CR) 9 and above. The CR 9 change was because of the introduction of unicode support. Because of the support for unicode CR 9, 10, and XI cannot save the file in previous formats. Open the report in the version in which it was created.
    3. The export file, upon which the report depends, is corruptedRecreate the exportwithin the Blackbaud application.
  • I found that same solution, Joshua.  The wierd part is the person who created the report with me - on her computer - can open it just fine.  She unwittingly moved it to a new folder and I told her you can't just cut and paste Crystal Reports without risking corruption.  So she cut and pasted it back to the oroginal location!  - and she can run it.  I was able to run it from within Custom Reports yesterday - but not today.  And I can't open it in RE or Crystal without getting the error.  I'm feeling very frustrated!
