Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Development Officer (DO) will be responsible for planning and executing fundraising and development activities based off an existing strategic plan. The successful candidate will be able to cultivate existing relationships as well as grow revenue through major gifts, special events, and corporate and foundation support. In coordination with the ED, the DO will manage the fundraising schedules and activities of team members, board members, event committees, and volunteers to maximize impact.

Responsibilities
  • Strategize with leadership to determine fundraising and development activities resulting in an annual work plan.
  • Plan and implement major gift strategies in conjunction with the overall work plan; identify and evaluate potential donors; design and implement prospect cultivation and solicitation strategies both prior and subsequent to the initial call.
  • Communicate with portfolio through face to face cultivation, solicitation and stewardship meetings, as well as written strategies; ensure that each major donor and prospect has a clear strategy and timeline for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Make discovery and prospect cultivation calls; identify, cultivate and solicit prospects in a timely manner bringing closure to the solicitation process; assume stewardship responsibility for all donors and prospects visited.
  • Develop an annual stewardship plan for donors with life time giving of $100,000 or more.
  • Support the fundraising efforts of the Executive Director in securing new and renewed gifts.
  • Train, manage and mobilize event committees and volunteers for small events and third party fundraising activities.
  • Personally conduct a mutually agreed upon number of prospect visits per month; direct the fundraising schedule (visits and calls) of team members including doctors.
  • Collaborate with Foundation team members including programs, events management, communications, and administration and finance.
  • In consultation with the Executive Director, develop and implement a plan of major gift activities in specific geographic regions.
  • Write gift and grant proposals, and stewardship reports as needed.
Qualifications
  • Understanding of non-profit fundamentals, including fundraising practices, concepts and techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and quickly gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including board and staff members, donors, foundation and civic leaders; experience recruiting and organizing volunteers.
  • Experience and expertise with CRM databases.
  • Understanding of the needs and interests of major gift donors in order to develop relationships and to think creatively and strategically about engagement of donors.
  • Ability to analyze portfolio donor’s or prospect’s financial capacity, charitable and economic interests, level of interest in and linkage to the Foundation and draw conclusions from a major donor fundraising perspective.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ease and skill in cultivating relationships with people of diverse backgrounds, ages, and circumstances.
  • Excellent communication skills and presentation skills with ability to persuade in speech and in writing.
  • Understands and applies Fundraisers Code of Ethics for donor relations.
  • Ability to balance an individual's right to privacy with the needs of the organization to collect, analyze, record, maintain, use, and disseminate information.
  • Must have a collaborative work style and the ability to partner with all levels of the organization.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of three to five years development experience, background in sales helpful.
  • This position requires the ability to travel.
  • The successful candidate will be a mature, accomplished and consistent professional.
  • S/he will be a self-starter with a strong work ethic who is conscientious, attentive to detail and who is results-oriented.
  • This person must have an understanding of the vital relationship between mission and money and be able to communicate this.
  • The successful candidate will be eager for the hunt. S/he will be motivated by the discovery of potential, naturally curious, always following up on leads and seeking the potential in a situation or prospective donor.
