Free registrations for paid event?

Options
Our upcoming Paws in the Park event has a $10 registration fee but we would like to allow sponsors to register for free.

Is this possible in Team Raiser?  How have others handled this?

Thanks so much!

  • Hi Chris,

Sure thing!  You have two standard options for this. The most common would be to create a "Discount Code" that you could send to Sponsors for a "free registration." They simply enter the code to get "100% discount" or "$10 off" (depending on how you configure it).

The other option would be to create a second Participation Type just for sponsors.. that is a $0 fee. You would add a "Promo Code" (something like SPONSOR) to the Participation Type when configuring it.. and that will hide it from the general public... but reveal it to anyone that has the promo code added to the end of a link you provide them. (&s_promoCode=SPONSOR)

I hope that helps point you in the right direction!

You are the man!  Is there one you would recommend over the other?

    Thanks so much!

  • Actually, the URL did not work without it showing as an option on the registration page.

I don't want it to be a public option for people to select.
  • Hey Chris,

The "Discount Code" option is probably the easier ... but both have their advantages. The nice thing about the unique Particpiation Type with "Promo Code" option.. is that you can conditionalize content on the Thank You for registering page and autoresponder (and also Participation Center) based on that if you wanted to share a unique message for sponsors only.

Not sure what you mean by the URL didn't work.. but happy to try to answer if you can unpack that a bit more. If you're referring to creating a second Participation Type... make sure you add a "Promo Code" in order to hide that second option from the general public.

    Thanks,

  • So sorry, Jon!

The Promo Code option with the URL does not seem to be providing a free registration option unless the free option is displays publically for everyone to see.

I’ve got my discount setup and associated with my individual registration, but not I have a silly question.  Where is the discount code entered by the user?

Thanks again for all of your help!

    Chris

  • Hey Chris,

After you create your Discount Code.. there is an often missed step. Go back to the Discount code and look for the "Associate" link. You have to assign the Discount Code to a Participation Type. Then, when someone registers with that type.. they will see a field to enter the Discount Code right below on the Participation Options page.

Oh.. also.. a tip:  Don't use the "d. Define Eligibility" step at all... as that will require a login and only cause confusion.

    Thanks!

  • This is embarassing...I had them associated correctly but the discount start date was set to three hours in the future.  That's why it was not working correctly.  Silly mistake.

    Thank you again!
