IRA required minimum distributions

Options
I have a request to track people in RE who may be subject to required minimum distributions from their IRA/Roth accounts. Does anyone do this? Do you recommend using the Prospect tab or using an attribute? I believe the intention is to send mail/email to these folks at the end of the year.

  • I have heard of people who consider stocks and IRA gifts to fall into the realm of Planned Giving, though my organization has never done so. And, we don't have the Prospect module, so I can't answer to that. An Attribute would seem the easiest way to track them if you planned to access that segment on a regular basis. You could also add an "IRA" Solicit code on Bio 1.

If it is just a one-time pull, you can pull a mailing list from the donor's gift information. For instance, we always mark IRA gifts in the gift reference, so I could pull a Constituent query of all individuals whose gift reference contains "IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution", and then Export a mailing list from that Query. So if it's a one-time mailing, I wouldn't clutter up your Attributes with that notation.

Let me know what you finally settle upon. I'm kind of curious how other people track this, and how other organizations market to donors of this type.
  • At Yosemite Conservancy we mark gifts from an IRA with a Gift Code of "IRA Distribution" so we can group those who has given this way in the past.  Since the primary criteria for the IRA/Roth rollover is age, any communications we do are based on queries of Age or Gift Code.

We decided to make an attribute so that solicitors can add it to records when they are interacting with donors. I believe the plan is to market by email or mailings at the end of each calendar year...we will see if that happens...

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it!
