Birth date field - and partial entry

To help understand our constituent demographics we'd like to capture some age-related information.  The birthdate field is the obvious solution.  However, it seems to require complete info: MM/DD/YYYY.  I can see some constituents being reluctant to give that much information but perhaps be willing to share birth year.  I went to my own record in C360 and tried to save it with just the year and got an error message:

Error: The following fields have missing or invalid values:

"Date of Birth" date cannot be partially specified.

Is the only alternative to use a UDF?

Every date field requires a month, day, and year, so if you want to capture only birth year you'd need to use either a custom string or a custom number field.
