Is Janrain-ing on Your Parade?

Options
Has your attempt to successfully configure Janrain before the New Year (or more importantly the Gigya cutoff deadline of 12/31) got you feeling like you’ve been left out in the rain?  If so, take cover; this posting is for you.

While the new platform improvements such as increased social provider options and improved social login/sharing are significant, I have to admit, not everyone is having the ideal configuration experience.  When it comes to social sharing in particular, some social providers (*cough* Facebook *cough*) require additional configuration steps that can seem to be a bit, well, cloudy in explanation.

In order to make sure we’re providing a more seamless transition, we’ve created a couple of guides to walk you through the steps to configure both Janrain and more importantly, your Facebook Developer app for social sharing.    Now, having gone through the process myself, I can tell you that the steps to configure social sharing for Facebook is in a word – convio, I mean, convo-luted.  The reason for this, I beleive, is that the sharing functionality for Facebook requires a special permission called "publish_actions" that requires a "few" additional steps beyond the basic setup for Social Login.  Some of these items include writing a long description of your app and step-by-step instructions on how your app is going to be used along with adding screenshots and screencasts of your Facebook app in action. Now, while there's not a Dislike button for this process, there is the Facebook Developer App Guide we've created.  Hopefully, it will eliminate a lot of the guesswork in completing this part of the configuration.
