Year-over-year persistence of teams

Hello TeamRaiser Clients,

I am looking at requirements for the above feature and I have a very important question that I need your feedback on.

As I am investigating what it would take to bring this functionality to market there is a clear issue with the idea of reclaiming or reactivating a team and who is the "owner" of that team

The issue is that when the next event season comes around and returning participants are back on your site to reactivate their team:

1. The first team member to return and register/reactivate the team automatically becomes the team captains.
   • this probably is easiest on event managers and administrators
   • this makes it easy to ensure that there is always a captain
   • this might create a bad experience for the previous captains if they are automatically ousted and need to then ask the team member to return them to captain status
2. Only team captains / co-captains can reactivate a team
   • probably delivers a better experience to recurring captains
   • could potentially be a pitfall if the captains never come back
   • could potentially require admin intervention to "straighten out" teams
     

I would love to hear your feedback and other use cases that you would like me to consider.
