S9 templates

The S-Tag document for the S9 tag states that,

"A template customization can be done to customize this tag further. A DateOutput_foo.tpt template has access to these application arguments."

And then the document goes on to list a whole slew of application arguments.

This sounds fantastic but how does it work?  Do I create this elusive DateOutput_foo template myself? If so, is there a template of this template I could model my template on?  After I have it - where do I put it and how do I call it?

Any thoughts or guidance would be greatly appreciated

Thanks Noah - I kinda figured that was the case.

Is there any way I could have a look at a sample template?  I am a hands on learner and if I had a better grasp of how Convio templates work, I believe I would be able to ask better questions and make more accurate assessments regarding their use/usefulness on our site.
