importing email recipients like BBNC

Options
Hello All,

I'm with an org that just purchased Luminate which has used Netcommunity before.  They have asked me if there is a ways that they can load a list of Recipients (with fist/last name, email)  for the email marketing campaign. Sometimes they get a list of emails from various sources and send email blast so they send newsletters or other campaign appeals

Appreciate all the help!

Thanks,

  • Sure thing!  You'll follow this path:

Data Management > Import/Export > Create Custom Constituent Import

Ideally.. you'll want to add a column to your csv file w/ a Group ID number... so that the list can be assigned to a specific segmentation group in Luminate, that you can then use as the Email target audience. You can set up that group ahead of time via:

Constituent 360 > Groups > Add New Group  (and take note of the group ID number after it's created, as that'll be what you use in the additional csv column)

    Thanks,

    Jon

  • Good tip on the segmenting, but I just wanted to pitch using Interests rather then groups for email.

Interests allow your constituents to segment themselves as they like via their user profile. This way they can stop receiving a just certian type of communication without unsubscribing from your list entirely, which is their only option if you send to a group.

You can set up default interests that everyone gets (Newsletter), there can be hidden interests (Solicitations) that are only revealed when opting out, and many actions in Luminate can also add the constituent to an interest (registering for a marathon could add them to your Athletic Events interest.)

You can use the Do-Not-Send groups to supress subsets of your targeted interest, so you could still send to Athletic Events about your new 5K, but supress anyone who wasn't in a past running event - cause steppers just won't care.

It took a bit of convincing for my senior leadership to go this route at first - they were on the send everything to everyone train - and those that wound up with small interests were unhappy at first. But spamming your whole file with a nitch communication is not good for your house file health overall, and does little to help that communication anyhow.

We've been using interests for a few years now, and our house file is huge with very low unsubscribe and spam rates.  Opens and clicks didn't change a huge amount either, even when the interest membership is a fraction of the old way.

An interest of 1000 members that care is way better than sending to 110,000 that are mostly annoyed. You just can't force people to accept your email, and it hurts you to try.

I definetely agree with you, but it looks like the send all camp is on the helm, but I would not hesitate to suggest.

  • Thanks, Brian.

I think I'm going to explore this as it is somewhat similar to what we have been using in BBNC before.

This was the case here when Luminate was implemented. But after sending emails by Campaigs and Interests, there was a decrease in total email opt-outs since people were able to opt out of specific topics (events, newsletters, etc). When people sign up for newsletters, they are opted in to all the Interests and it's up to them to unsubscribe from specific Interests.
