ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE: Founded in 1972, Covenant House is the largest charity across the hemisphere serving homeless, trafficked and runaway youth. Located in 27 cities across 6 countries (Canada, the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua) Covenant House offers a broad range of essential services to help youth move from poverty to opportunity and from homelessness to hope. These services include emergency shelter, transitional and supported housing, food, clothing, legal aid, medical care, educational services (including high school diploma programs and GED certificate programs), job training and placement services, childcare and parenting support programs.

PRIMARY FUNCTION OF POSITION: The Database Administrator is responsible for the maintenance, performance, integrity and security of Covenant House databases (TEAM Approach, Kintera or other email transaction DB). Additional role requirements will include planning, development and troubleshooting.

The Database Administrator will ensures that data remains consistent across the databases; data is clearly defined; users access data concurrently in a form that suites their needs; there is provision for data security and recovery (all data is retrievable in an emergency).

JOB DUTIES: Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Establish the needs of users and monitor user access and security monitoring performance and manage parameters to provide fast query responses to "front end" users.
  • Map out the "conceptual design" for a planned database in outline.
  • Consider both 'back end' organization of data and 'front end' accessibility for end users.
  • Refine the "logical design" so that it can be translated into a specific data model.
  • Further refine the "physical design" to meet system storage requirements.
  • Install and test new versions of the database management system (DBMS).
  • Write database documentation, including data standards, procedures and definitions for the data dictionary ("metadata").
  • Control access permissions and privileges.
  • Develop, manage and test backup and recovery plans.
  • Ensure that storage, archiving, backup and recovery procedures are functioning correctly.
  • Work closely with IT project managers, database programmers and finance and development staff.
  • Communicate regularly with technical, applications and operational staff to ensure database quality control, integrity and security.
  • Commission and install new applications.
  • Serve as a resource and provide support to Headquarters and other CH sites in use of TEAM APPROACH.
  • All other duties as assigned by CFO.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Experience with SQL, Oracle.
  • Donor databases a plus.
  • Excellent written, organizational, interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Excellent customer relations/service skills and able to work with all levels of employees.
  • Occasional travel as needed.
  • Must be dedicated to the mission of Covenant House.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • 8-10 years' experience in Database Management or related field.
