Utilizing both RE and FIMS

Options
We use FIMS (from Microedge) for all things financial - general ledger, fund accounting, etc.  After FIMS was already in place, we purchased RE several years ago for donor management.  Are there others out there who use both, and how do you cut down on duplication of gift entry, etc.?

Thanks,

Lauren

  • Hi Lauren,

I've cross-posted this over to the MicroEdge Community, as well, to see if we can get you some responses to your question.

  • Hi Lauren,

We use FIMS and Raiser's Edge much as you do.  We made the decision to manage donor gifts only in RE therefore avoiding duplication of effort.  To get the financial data from RE to FIMS an accountant exports a CSV file from RE and imports it to FIMS.  This works very well for us.  We user FIMS to manage Donor Advised Funds, Supporting Foundations and Endowment Funds.  Some donors may have a constituent record (BIO) in RE and a profile record in FIMS.

Your next question may be about how we report information about a constituent who has a foot in both worlds.  If you attending MESC 2015 Bryan Geary and I will be giving a presentation on reporting on data from two different sources using Compass.  I will focus on the RE <--> FIMS piece of the presentation.  The short answer is that we, at JCF, maintain the FIMS fund ID in RE.  This gives us the link to query data from RE and match it to FIMS (we also maintain the RE CID in FIMS using Fieldmaker fields).

Let me know if you have other questions.

    Sally
